Jama Masjid In Delhi

Jama Masijd - Delhi The largest mosque in Asia, Jama Masjid (Masjid-i-Jahan Numa) was commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the city of Shahjahanabad (presently Old Delhi). It is located near the majestic Red Fort and Chandni Chowk Market. It can accommodate 25,000 worshippers altogether.

The Mosque was completed in 6 years at the cost of about million rupees with the efforts of 5,000 workers. Shah Jahan built several mosques in Agra, Ajmer and Lahore, but the Jama Masjid in Delhi is more impressive and bigger in structure. With three giant gates, four towers and two 40 m-high minarets constructed of strips of red sandstone and white marble.

Despite the over-all vast proportions of the mosque, its several component parts have been blended together in such complete harmony and effortless homogeneity as to result in a magnificent monument of great grace and elegance.

The mosque also houses curious collection of several relics in a closet in the north gateway, including an antique copy of the Qur'an written on deer skin.
One of the greatest Mosques in Delhi, the Jama Masjid is one major attraction in Delhi showcasing India's fine blend of architecture. It is mandatory for the tourists to take off their shoes before entering the mosque and to cover themselves modestly, from head to toe.
